It’s been a challenging year with the coronavirus pandemic forcing us to abandon our best-laid plans and adapt to life under lockdown, social distancing and even missing loved ones overseas. These challenges make Chinese New Year celebrations even more important to us as we get ready to usher in the new year of the Ox with health and abundance.
Although this year will look a bit different, we can still celebrate with close family and welcome a few loved ones into our homes. Here are some simple ways for you to enhance the energy of your space and use positive aromas to welcome in the year of the Ox.
Mandarin is perfect to diffuse during Chinese New Year festivities, plus it makes a great gift. Citrus fruits such as oranges and mandarins are traditional symbols of abundance and good fortune. The Chinese words for orange and mandarin sound similar to luck or wealth, and their colour represent gold or money. These oils also bring a clean, fresh and uplifting atmosphere to the home. You can also add these oils to our ceramic diffusers and hang them around your home for a beautiful, festive aroma.
Lemon has a bright, cheerful aroma which helps revitalise moods and bring more energy to your space. Making a room spray with lemon oil is a great way to add an instant energy lift to your home. Just pick up one of our 4oz spray bottles and fill it with distilled water (or boiled tap water), add 20 drops of lemon essential oil and shake well before each use. You can mix up this room spray recipe by adding 10 drops of orange or mandarin with 10 drops of lemon essential oil to add a real citrus burst to your home.
Bergamot has a strong association with prosperity. Its positive and fresh aroma brings joy and happiness into our homes. Simply diffuse Bergamot to create a relaxing atmosphere and deodorise unpleasant scents.
Lemongrass has been associated with attracting wealth and good fortune. Simply diffuse Lemongrass to help revitalise the mind and body. You can also make a beautiful room spray with this oil using the recipe mentioned above.
Peppermint’s clean and crisp aroma helps to relieve mental fatigue and is known to cleanse the air for clear communications. Simply diffuse Peppermint to help energise the body, mind and spirit. Or add a drop to your palms, rub your hands together and inhale for an instant energy boost. Inhaling peppermint has also been known to help with mild headaches. Peppermint oil is also a great oil to add to your cleaning supplies as it keeps pests away (which weren’t invited to your Chinese New Year celebrations), such as ants and cockroaches. Add 3-4 drops to your mop bucket before cleaning the floors or add 2-3 drops to our ceramic stone diffuser and hang around your home, place them in your cupboards, shoe cabinets and your car.
Frankincense is associated with abundance and treasure, making it a great essential oil to diffuse around your home during the holidays. Emotionally, frankincense is a beautifully grounding oil to help one live in the moment. It is also used for meditation and relaxation as it helps to calm and centre the mind while reducing stress levels. Make a calming and centring roller bottle blend to carry around with you over the holidays. Simply add jojoba oil (or any carrier oil of your choice) to our 10ml roller bottle and add 6 drops of frankincense oil. Roll on wrists and temples whenever you need a moment of calm.
Ginger is known to stimulate prosperity and is a great oil to diffuse after a holiday feast. Emotionally, ginger oil has been known to stimulate willpower and restore motivation, which many of us need after a big meal. If you feel slightly queasy after your meal, add one drop of ginger and one drop of orange oil to your palms, rub together and inhale. You can also add these oils to our ceramic stone diffuser and inhale whenever your stomach is doing flips (great for long car journeys while visiting relatives).
Cypress is associated with resiliency and the perseverance to see projects and changes through to successful completion. It is known to bring peace during emotional transitions and is a popular oil for those experiencing life changes. Cypress is also used to keep the body’s energy flowing steadily. For example, it may help open the breath and chest and protect health as the seasons change. Diffuse this herbaceous-scented oil throughout your home to encourage peace, harmony, and serenity.
If you love to mix things up a bit and want to create some custom diffuser blends for your Chinese New Year gathering, here are some of our favourite combinations to inspire you. But don’t be afraid to tweak these recipes to suit your taste. Blending different essential oils in your diffuser is a great way to customise an aroma for your home that you will love, and sparks joy over the holidays.
